To Kill a Mockingbird is a play adapted for the stage by Christopher Sergel from the world-renowned novel by Harper Lee of the same name. The play debuted in the self-proclaimed "Literary Capital of Alabama," Monroeville, and runs every year in May on the grounds of the county courthouse with the local townspeople participating as actors. Because the novel was set in Monroeville (the author's hometown), the town feels a civic duty to relive Harper Lee's classic on stage, despite the author's distaste for the public trading on the popularity her work. Nevertheless, Sergel's adaptation has become a town ritual of sorts and has only served to increase the number of visitors to the town looking to experience the place where one of America's greatest novels was set. The play has since spread in popularity outside of Monroeville and has become a favorite of sorts for community and high school theaters throughout the US.
