It's not very often that a composer gets banned for writing pieces that are void of any words. But Austrian late-romantic composer Gustav Mahler was banned by some governments because of his religious affiliation and what they perceived to be denominational rank rising. He converted from Judaism to Catholicism to secure a position as director of the Vienna Court Opera and this action angered some. But the compositions he wrote are enduring and he is now regarded as one of the more accomplished composers of his generation.
