London singer Anika conjures Warhol muse Nico most obviously, but her German heritage seeps into her singing voice in a way that makes her much more haunting and austere. Teaming with Portishead producer Geoff Barrow, the two recorded her debut self-titled album in a 12 day period, connecting over their love of dub, punk and 80s new wave. The album is partly a collection of covers--most of them of iconic voices like Yoko Ono and Bob Dylan--as well as Anika's own material.
