Starting her first band right out of school--calling it Cheap Hotel--Anna Calvi immediately caught the attention of the popular indie label Domino Records. The imprint was impressed with her deep, powerful vocals, evident songwriting ability and good looks. Taking the two backing members from Cheap Hotel with her as part of her band, Calvi signed to Domino, which put out her debut LP in 2011. Clearly influenced both by 1980s dramatic goth pop and 1940s lounge singers, Calvi seamlessly blends these two disparate styles together into smoky-voiced dark pop, which has charmed audiences throughout the US and UK.
