Based in Nashville by way of New Braunfels, TX Sixpence None the Richer is a Christian rock band composed of guitarist Matt Slocum and vocalist Leigh Nash. After meeting at a church retreat in the early 1990s, the two artists chose a name from C. S. Lewis' book Mere Christianity and set out to record an album. Sixpence None the Richer released The Fatherless and the Widow with R.E.X. Records in 1993, and assembled a full band for live performances as well as its follow-up studio album, 1995's This Beautiful Mess. Upon signing with Steve Taylor's Squint Entertainment label and releasing a self-titled album, the band began to slowly tap into a wider audience, particularly in 1999 with the release of the single "Kiss Me," which became a national hit. Six Pence None the Richer disbanded in 2004 following the dissolution of Squint Entertainment, but reformed in 2007 with a new EP, My Dear Machine and a subsequent tour of the US and Europe.
