Born in Glasgow, Scotland, David Knopfler owned a variety of instruments by the time he was 11, including a guitar, piano, and drum kit. Along with his brother Mark, Knopfler founded 70s and 80s English rock group, Dire Straits, where he produced two albums with the band before moving on to a solo career. Similar to his work with his former band, Knopfler creates roots rock and roll with some jazz and blues influences with his solo material. He has also occasionally worked with film, scoring the music for movies such as, Shergar (1984) and Laser Mission (1989).
