Day 1, Tuesday, March 13, 2018 Building Science/High Performance Building Foundation

Instructor Peter Yost will lay the groundwork for designing, specifying, and building high performance homes: homes that are energy efficient, resource-efficient, durable, healthy, and valuable. Achieving this must start with building science: understanding how energy and moisture move on, through and in our buildings. Peter will use recent projectsdesign reviews, building investigations, materials testingto make practical the building science behind high performance construction.

Day 2, Wednesday, March 14, 2018 Local and National High Performance Projects

Steve Baczek is a jobsite architect with leading high performance homes throughout New England and the Southwest. Doug Horgan of BOWA is a topnotch high performance renovator in the Greater Washington, DC area. These guys will use recent projects to bring all the building science to the real world.

Day 3, Friday, April 20, 2018 High Performance Building Tour

Join us on the TW Perry bus for a high performance building tour, where we will examine building design, materials, and operation/maintenance of selected buildings. During the tour and bus ride, Peter and Doug will regale riders with building stories and answer any questions you may have. We will be returning to Lincoln Cottage to really go behind the scenes of this historic Gothic Revival cottage in northwest DC and go to one or two ongoing renovation projects to do some performance testing and hygrothermal building assessments.

The bus tour is optional and there is limited seating; please sign up today to reserve your seat. TW Perry will contact you with the meeting address and time. Tour includes continental breakfast and a full hot lunch.

Instructors:

Peter Yost is a Principal and Vice President of Technical Services for BuildingGreen, Inc., based out of Brattleboro, Vermont. He has been building, researching, teaching, writing and consulting on high performance homes for nearly thirty years. His expertise ranges from construction waste management and advanced framing to energy efficiency and building durability. In addition, Peter is the Technical Director for GreenBuildingAdvisor.com.

Doug Horgan is a Residential construction professional with extensive knowledge acquired through both education and experience over the course of 27 years. Currently employed at BOWA, one of the DC areas premier construction companies, and with extensive training in ENERGY STAR, LEED for Homes and other industry programs, Doug has a vast knowledge of building techniques, typical failures and building codes. Doug has also served as an author, instructor, and presenter on general construction, building science, and green building.

Steven Baczek Architect is a nationally-acclaimed architect, designing and developing custom residential structures for over 24 years. He has designed hundreds of projects across the spectrum of energy performance, comfort, and durability, to include many of the nations top energy conscious homes. Notable projects include a handful of PassiveHomes to include the Nations first Certified Passive House Retrofit under Enerfit, numerous Zero Energy Homes and Retrofits, and many Deep Energy Retrofits.
