The 2019 Portsmouth Athenaeum Chamber Music series opens July 21 at 3 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, NH with cellist Sebastian Baverstam and pianist Constantine Finehouse performing sonatas by Brahms and Shostakovich.

Cellist Sebastian Baverstam, who has received rave reviews for his performances from an early age, is a graduate of New England Conservatory and is currently studying electro-acoustic composition techniques in Sweden. Originally from Newton, MA, he returns to the U.S. to perform with pianist Constantine Finehouse, now a familiar face in Portsmouth. The duo will perform what Mr. Baverstam has called a “high voltage” program: Brahms’ F Major Cello Sonata No. 2, which weaves cello and piano together as if in a full symphonic score, and Shostakovich’s powerful Cello Sonata, whose discomfiting tempi combine with the composer’s unusual harmonic language to depict the sound of modern stresses and torment.

The Portsmouth Athenaeum’s Chamber Music series continues August 11 with Musicians from A Far Cry at The Dance Hall in Kittery, ME at 3 p.m. Future dates include Omer String Quartet at on September 22 at North Church of Portsmouth at 3 p.m.; and Neave Piano Trio on October 27 at The Dance Hall, Kittery at 3 p.m.

Audience members planning to attend all four concerts can purchase a Series Subscription for $75.00 per person. The Portsmouth Athenaeum also offers Series Patronage for $250 per person, which includes admission to all four concerts and an invitation to post-concert receptions with the performers in private homes after each event. There is a suggested $20 advance or at-the-door donation for each concert for those who elect not to subscribe to the full series.

Those interested in subscriptions, patronage or individual tickets can mail an appropriate check made out to The Portsmouth Athenaeum to P.O. Box 848, Portsmouth, NH 03802 with “PACM” noted on the memo line.
