Sheffield, England-based band Arctic Monkeys holds the record for the fastest selling debut album in UK history. Shortly after being formed in 2002, the four-piece gave away free demos at local shows, but never posted any of its music on the Internet. Fans, however, promptly spread the demos online and created a highly popular MySpace page for the band, garnering it an impressive fan base and causing record labels to court the group. Perhaps because the Arctic Monkeys never focused too much on promoting itself and instead focused on the music it was creating, the band was able to hone its sound without the pressure of pleasing a label. The result has been a catalog of songs that have helped the band stand apart from the myriad of other British rock groups with highly witty and wry lyrics, as well as particularly catchy guitar riffs.
