Its fairly common for "good" bands to achieve little to none commercial success. Yo La Tengo is a perfect example. The group formed in New Jersey in 1984 and despite releasing several critically acclaimed albums--that showcase the band's ability to write intelligent songs that typically fall into the alternative/experimental category--the band is still widely ignored by the musical mainstream. But this is a good thing--at least in theory. Bands like Yo La Tengo that have an underground following of dedicated fans who are eager to throw themselves at any and all of sonic discharge that a band spews out proves that a group can maintain high levels of artistic creativity without compromising itself in an attempt to cater to the mainstream and make money.
