Prolific drummer Mickey Hart is perhaps best-known as one of the drummers for the prolific and pioneering jam band the Grateful Dead, though he has contributed to several different projects in addition to serving as the creative leader of The Mickey Hart Band. Having released over a dozen solo albums in three decades, starting with Rolling Thunder, his debut solo album he recorded during a hiatus he took from the Grateful Dead in 1972. He returned to the band in 1974, until Jerry Garcia died--forcing the group's dissolution in 1995. Among his other projects, he continues to collaborate with fellow Grateful Dead members under the name The Dead. Dedicated to keeping global music traditions alive, Hart has worked with archivists and ethnomusicologists to record styles of music on the brink of extinction.
