Belle of Amherst is a one woman play that's based on the life of poet Emily Dickinson. Set in her Amherst, Massachusetts home, the play uses her poems, diaries and letters to create a narrative that centers around the difficulty of her seclusion and the rare moments when she was able to experience some sense of joy. Belle of Amherst was written by william Luce and had its premiere in 1976 at the Longacre Theatre in New York City.
