Credited as one of the pioneering acts of the stoner rock genre, Fu Manchu was formed in 1987 in Orange County, CA with a sound and style that fell somewhere between stoner metal, hard rock and punk rock. Since its 1994 debut album, No One Rides for Free, the band has blended heavy, skuzzy, psych-influenced guitar riffs with punk energy, and lyrics about skateboarding and muscle cars, making the band a beloved act of skateboarding culture in the 1990s. Fu Manchu has maintained the same energy after over two decades of existence and ten studio albums, offering its raucous live shows to multiple generations of fans.
