The Chicago rock outfit Distractions is certainly on-board with indie music's fascination with surf music, but manages to add it to its sound in slightly less obvious and derivative ways than some of its contemporaries. The unflashy drumming, tambourine shakes and reverb-soaked, tremolo-heavy guitar parts of surf definitely factor into the band's material. But horns and keyboards also work themselves into the mix, keeping the arrangements fresh and interesting. Strong backing vocals and harmonies are also a strong suit for Distractions, which released its debut 7", We Were Better Off in the Rain, in 2010.
