Cervantes's epic novel of the same name has served as the inspiration for many balletic works, the most enduring of which was choreographed by Marius Petipa with a score by Ludwig Minkus. The Russian-originated version has spread throughout the world since its premiere in 1869. The ballet retells one of the legendary tales in the episodic tale of Don Quixote, the knight of La Mancha whose imagination and tenacity take him from adventure to adventure with the aid of his bumbling right-hand man, Sancho Panza. Its balletic reincarnation has received the attention of the best composers and choreographers of the day, eager to reinvent this classic tale through movement time and time again.
