The Normal Heart is a semi-autobiographical play written by American author and gay rights activist Larry Kramer and is considered to be one of the most passionately sustained polemics on the rise of HIV-AIDS in New York during the early 1980s. The narrative follows the fiercely outspoken gay activist Ned Weeks as he tries to bring the AIDS epidemic into the national spotlight. Kramer's play explores the often counter-productive tendencies of activists at the time, where the private activism of those not comfortable with publicly showcasing their sexuality came into direct conflict with those who wanted to bring the issue out into the open. The Normal Heart experienced an extremely successful off-Broadway debut in 1985, and would be revived in London and again off-Broadway in 2004. The play made its Broadway debut in 2011.
