Lucifer was formed in 2014 following the break-up of lead vocalist Johanna Sadonis' band with Linnéa Olsson. She quickly set about putting together a band to continue exploring her love for metal and hard rock music. The new band, named Lucifer, released its first single "Anubis" in 2015 via Rise Above Records. Lucifer won a spot on the coveted Roadburn Festival that same year and also played odd gigs all across Germany. The release of its debut album Lucifer I, released in June 2015, was followed by a tour of North America in support of the album. The band moved base to Stockholm soon after and began working on its sophomore album Lucifer II which dropped in 2018. Since its formation, the band has gone through multiple changes in its lineup with Sadonis being the only constant member.
