In a career spanning five decades, Jamaican-born pianist Monty Alexander has built a reputation exploring and bridging the worlds of jazz, popular song and the music of his native Jamaica, finding in each a sincere spirit of musical expression. Learning how to play the piano at the age of six and soon developing a strong affinity for jazz, young Alexander was soon playing clubs in the Kingston area and appearing on numerous recording sessions. Releasing his debut album as a band leader in 1971, Alexander demonstrated a keen understanding and adept knowledge of how a group should be led through various sonic meanderings and instrumental loopholes.
