American vocal group The 5th Dimension's unique music is a melange of genres like Broadway music, jazz, light opera, pop, R&B and soul. Formed in the mid-1960s as the Versatiles, the group's career picked-up steam a few years later thanks to the popularity of songs such as "(Last Night) I Didn't Get to Sleep at All," "Medley: Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In (The Flesh Failures)," "Never My Love" and more. The group's five original members Billy Davis Jr., Marilyn McCoo, Lamonte McLemore, Florence LaRue and Ronald Townson, moved independently to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. Despite the group's demo tape being rejected, it managed to catch the attention of Johnny River who had just started out on his own. The 5th Dimension signed to his label Soul City in 1966 and released its first single "I'll Be Lovin' You Forever" to a lukewarm response. Its breakthrough came the following year in the form of "Up, Up and Away," a song that shot the group to fame and became its first top ten success. It also won multiple Grammy Awards and earned the group's debut album a gold certification. The group went on to release highly successful albums such as The Age of Aquarius, Portrait, Love's Lines, Angles and Rhymes and many more, soon attaining a cult status among fans of California-style sunshine pop. The 5th Dimension got a star on the Walk of Fame in 1991 and was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2002.
