Manna Gallery is pleased to present “Murmurations”, recent photographic works by Bay area artist Aynur Girgin Westen. Her exhibition opens Friday, June 28 and continues to August 3 . On First Friday, July 5, Ms. Westen will be present from 6 to 8 pm for her reception. At 7 pm, she will give a brief talk about her work and will answer questions from gallery visitors.

Aynur says, ”Growing up in rural western Turkey, I spent my days running between fields, climbing olive trees, and catching free rides by hanging on the backs of horse carts. Rows of cherries in wooden boxes, grooves in an old olive trunk, fig leaves between the thin branches—these images caught my attention early.

“Now, as a full-time artist, I still look at the world through the curious eyes of the girl from the village. A self-taught photographer, I employ camera shake, multiple exposures, and other unconventional techniques to transform familiar objects into abstract compositions.

“This series is entitled Murmurations, after the flocking behavior that occurs when thousands of starlings fly together as they prepare to roost. These multiple exposure photographs were shot in busy public spaces where individuals are forced together into human “flocks”. Anonymous figures pass each other at a frenetic pace, blending into each other, and creating ambiguous new shapes. Past, present, and future overlap. Ghosts appear in the crowd. Patterns emerge from chaos.”
