Toubab Krewe is an instrumental quartet based in Asheville, North Carolina that attempts to fuse the tribal music of Western Africa with American music, particularly that from the southern US. The band's name itself is a combination of the West African word toubab which means "foreigner," and krewe, which is a regional New Orleans spelling of the word "crew." Though the band's decidedly experimental approach to creating music has kept it from reaching mainstream success, many are praising the members of the band as being visionary musical alchemists that bring to the fore sounds and rhythms never heard before in either African music or rock n' roll alone.
