Terrence McNally's Master Class follows the musings of aging opera legend Maria Callas as she passes on her wisdom to eager budding performers. A diva to the core, Callas recounts her transformation from an "ugly duckling" to a triumph, both on and off stage. At the heart of the play is the theme of sacrifice for art's sake and the benefit of a little controversy every now and then. Master Class won both the Drama Desk Award for "Outstanding New Play" and the Tony Award for "Best Play" in 1996.
