About the Exhibition "Energy of Place: Lloyd x Latimer":

Under the umbrella project Documents of Resistance: Artists of Color Protest (1906spresent), Mexican-American artist Antonio Serna has been gathering material relating to the art and activism of artists of color. The story of the Latimer House is connected to this history through the efforts of Tom Lloyd and African-American artists and activist, who formed part of the Committee to Save Latimer House. Tom Lloyd was part of a legacy of artists of color who for over two decades fought to create and hold cultural space where Black artists and communities of color can celebrate their cultural contributions to society.

Exhibition/ Installation/Video: The exhibition will include a display of artwork inspired by the light sculptures of Tom Lloyd as well as archival documents related to Lloyds Store Front Museum in Queens and relation to the Lewis Latimer House Museum. For this Antonio Serna has researched public archives as well as other source material that remain of Lloyds activism and artwork. In addition to the installation Antonio has also organized a series of public events with notable scholars and community members to be held throughout the four month residency. He will also present in three parts Through These Doors: Lloyd X Latimer, an on-going personal experimental research focused video that explores the history of Tom Lloyds art and activism, from establishing The Store Front Museum, Queens first and historically only black-run art museum in Queens, to the saving of Lewis H. Latimers house in Queens.
