Chicago-born and Denver-raised artist Otis Taylor is a blues musician who has mastered several instruments including the guitar, mandolin, banjo and harmonica. Though he played in various blues bands until 1977, when he took a break from the industry to pursue other projects, Taylor didn't record any solo material until after he returned to music in 1995. He released Blue-Eyed Monster in 1996, setting the tone for his socially aware music with themes surrounding racism, poverty and murder, particularly within the black community. His contributions to blues music earned him the title of Best Blues Entertainer along with Etta James in 2004, but Taylor continued to evolve his sound by reconnecting with the banjo, an instrument he gave up after learning the instrument originated as an African instrument but came to be associated with white country music through the racist minstrel shows of the 19th century. He released the 2008 albumRecapturing the Banjo, to critical acclaim and solidified himself as a one of the most renowned blues artists in the US.
