Late January/early February mean the celebration of the Chinese New Year in the Chinatown neighborhood of lower Manhattan. With a huge paper dragon carried through the streets and people dressed in costumes, the sensory effect is dazzling. The many restaurants of Chinatown prepare for the thousands who come to see the raucous event, and a celebratory feast completes the experience. Fireworks have been banned, making it quieter but also perhaps a little less entertaining.
