Japanese rock group Toe can best be categorized into the attention deficit disorder genre known as math rock. More than many rock styles (due to the downplay of vocals), genres such as math rock often live or die on the strength of band members' chops and the creativity of the song arrangements. Luckily for Toe, it has got a knack for both. Drummer Kashikura Takashi is the real standout, cranking out propulsive polyrhythms and providing a steady backbone for the group's snaky guitar lines and shifts in time signature. Toe's music is also unique in its allowance of acoustic guitar as a prevalent fixture in its alternately mellow and hectic songs.
