Helmed by a formidable guitar player, who dubbed his group eponymously in his honor, the Alex Skolnick Trio is a New York-based jazz band that plays covers and puts unique spins on its interpretation of each track. Formed in 2004, the trio is known to cover popular heavy metal and classic rock songs - what the group calls "modern standards" - including cuts from bands like Rush, The Who, Black Sabbath and KISS. While the band isn't necessarily groundbreaking, in terms of musical advancement, all the members of the trio are extremely adept instrumentalists and add layers of nuanced jazz sounds to well known music staples.
