Stop At: Manhattan Walking Tour, New York City, NY 10028

Make your way to the High Line to begin this exciting 3.5-hour guided walking tour of the elevated park and the famous Greenwich Village. Expect to be wowed by the High Line. Once an elevated railway line for cargo that went all the way down the west side of Manhattan, it fell into disuse and was eventually abandoned in the 1970s. It sat there unused and unloved for decades until a group of locals, with a few celebrities tossed in for good measure, began a movement to turn it into a park.

As you’ll see during your walk, they succeeded. The first of three phases was completed in 2009. In September 2014, the third and final phase opened, completing a park that is 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long and is enjoyed equally by tourists and locals.

Learn about all the public art in the park, as well as the new buildings by famous architects that can be seen from the High Line. Once you’ve reached the end, at the Meatpacking District, descend the stairs and meet Greenwich Village, one of New York’s most historic and eye-pleasing neighborhoods. When New York City developed the grid street plan for Manhattan in the early 19th century, Greenwich Village already existed, which is why the neighborhood is a charming tangle of curving, confusing streets.

Explore the Village in a delicious way, through its food. Eat a slice of real Big Apple pizza and get clued in on where to find some of the best Italian specialties and chocolate confections in the city — you’ll make up to six stops and sample enough food to make a full lunch of it. But a neighborhood is more than just its food. Find out from the guide what famous people have lived in the neighborhood, and what famous people still do. Learn about the best underground jazz clubs and cool independent bookstores. The tour concludes in Greenwich Village, leaving you free to continue to explore this vibrant neighborhood.
