Jimmy Herring is a renowned guitarist from North Carolina who is best known for his work with Grateful Dead's bassist Phil Lesh. After studying guitar for several years, Herring spent most of his time playing with various jam bands and was often pursued by members of The Allman Brothers Band to fill their band's lead guitar position. Herring eventually joined the band for a summer tour in 2000 before accepting an offer to join Phil Lesh and Friends. He would go on to work with Lesh on another endeavor, this time with the other Grateful Dead members Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir, for a project called The Other Ones, now known as The Dead. Herring played in a mix of jazz, bluegrass and funk bands during the mid-2000s and finally released his debut solo album Lifeboat, in 2008. Primarily a instrumental rock/jazz fusion effort, the album was met with critical acclaim. He released his follow-up album Subject to Change Without Notice, in 2012.
