The Dayton, Ohio based band Guided by Voices helped write the book on lo-fi rock in the 1980s. The group would use extremely cheap tape recording methods and feeble instruments to create a characteristic form of noise that sounded like the material produced by a bunch of uneducated, Neanderthal-like individuals who have no musical background but are given instruments and told to record a few tracks using a partially broken tape recorder. The amount of recordings Guided by Voices has created is impressive, though, and the amateur tunes that the group wrote resonated with quite a quite a lot of people, causing the band to go down in the annals of music history as one of the more innovative groups to have ever recorded music within the lo-fi genre.
