Country music singer/songwriter Ronald Clyde Crosby operates under the stage name Jerry Jeff Walker. He was born in Oneonta, New York where he became a member of the band The Tones, though his music career with the band was cut short when a record deal excluded him and another member from recording sessions. After a succession of failed band attempts, Walker adopted his nickname and focused on becoming a solo artist. His 1968 hit single "Mr. Bojangles," featured on an album of the same name, would go on to become his most well-known and covered song. Walker relocated to Austin, where he associated with artists such as Willie Nelson, Guy Clark and Waylon Jennings, and developed a signature brand of music that he calls "cowjazz." He opened his own record label, Tried & True Music in 1986, after being disillusioned by the mainstream music business. His switch from major labels to his own independent label coincided with an increasingly autobiographical theme in his music that is particularly evident on his 1987 album, Gypsy Songman. Walker's increasingly honest music seems to have earned him a strong connection in Austin, where his annual birthday celebration has become a highly sought after event that attracts some of the biggest names in country music.
