The Go-Go's is a pop rock band from Los Angeles that made history for being the first all-female band to top the album charts with its own songs and by playing its own instruments. Formed in 1978, the band was originally a hard-lined punk band with strong ties to the Southern Californian punk community, before opting to reinvent its sound with a distinctively radio friendly new wave style. The group released its debut LP, Beauty and the Beat, in 1981 and the album went on to perform extremely well--helping establishing the group as one of the more poplar acts of its generation. After being pushed to the very limits of commercial success, band tensions reached a broiling point and forced the group to break up in 1985. However, the allure of playing its hits proved too great to resist and the band has since returned and toured several times over, playing its well-known 1980s songs to nostalgically-minded audiences.
