Gudhi Padwa is celebrated as the "New Year Day" by Maharashtrians, according to the Hindu calender. It is believed that Brahma, the God of Creation created this universe on this day. On this day, families hoist the Gudhi (flag) which is also called the Brahma Dhwaj to commemorate the victory of Rama over Ravana and his return from exile. The traditional Gudhi comprises of a piece of cloth ornamented with a brocade tied to a bamboo stick. It is then covered by a silver or copper "kalash" (pot) put upside down and beautified with mango and neem twigs, "batasha" (sweets) and flowers. The Gudhi is tied on the entrance of the house to ward off evil and usher prosperity in house. The copper pot put in an inverted direction signifies the throwing away of ego and emphasizes on the principle of modesty, kindness and love.
