This classic comedic ballet premiered in France in 1870, quickly bringing itself to the forefront of the balletic repertoire. Based upon two tales by 19th century German author E.T.A. Hoffmann, Coppélia is about Franz, a young villager, who pushes aside his sweetheart, Swanhilde, when he falls in love with a life-sized doll named Coppelia, who he mistakes to be real. The critically acclaimed music by composer Léo Delibes bear the message that the truth will set one free, and that reality is much more significant than the ideal.
