Natalie Dessay is a French coloratura soprano who has earned a reputation for her dramatic flare. With a surprising knack for comedic timing, she rose to prominence as an opera vocalist and actress in the early 1990s, starting with her role of Olympia in Roman Polanski's The Tales of Hoffmann at the Opera Bastille in 1992. Though the production wasn't particularly successful, it was the beginning of Dessay's renowned theatrical career which brought her to countries around Europe and eventually to the US. She made her New York debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1994 as Fiakermilli in Strauss's Arabella. Following complications with vocal chord surgery, Dessay was virtually off the stage from 2002 to 2005, but eventually came back with the same force she debuted with.
