Rather than being a sad occasion, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a happy time when loved ones are remembered. Families set up ofrendas (altars) filled with candles, flowers, pan de puerto (bread) and fruit arranged around pictures of the departed ones. In the evening the entire family goes to the cemetery to clean the grave and decorate it with candles flowers and anything the deceased one loved. The family then settles down for a picnic by the grave and passes the night singing and visiting with one another.
