Memphis is predominantly noted as the birthplace of rock and roll, but the city offers more in terms of its musical culture. The Memphis Symphony Orchestra was initially established in 1952 by a group of musicians who wanted to pay homage to many different classical music groups that rose and fell in the city’s history. In its debut, there were only enough members for it to be called the Memphis Sinfonietta, but in less than a decade it evolved into a full-fledged sinfonia.
