While working at a pawn shop in Austin, Texas in the mid-2000s Joe Lewis picked up a used a guitar and started strumming. The chords and strings he plucked resonated well with Lewis and he began to play a number of small clubs and open mics around the Texas city. Soon, other musicians were attracted to Lewis' natural songwriting ability and were interested in forming a fully fledged band. The group started rehearsing and after deciding on the name Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, the modern blues band started at serious venues - soon catching the eye of interested listeners and record industry types, the latter providing capital to record the group's debut album.
