Black Flag was one of the seminal American hardcore punk bands during the 1980s. Fronted by a series of intensely talented lead singers, the band's bratty and confrontational style caused a stir in its time, while inspiring countless bands that would come after. The group was formed in Hermosa Beach, California in 1976 by guitarist Gregg Ginn, a staple of the lineup who oversaw its various personnel and stylistic changes over the years. In addition to its snarling lyrical output preaching nonconformity, Black Flag was known for its devotion to a DIY work ethic, slowly building its fan base through hard work and a dedication to touring. In the years leading up to its 1986 split, the band began to counter its hardcore sound with forays into experimental genres such as free jazz and psychedelic rock.
