Chulalongkorn Memorial Day

This solemn day commemorates the death of Chulalongkorn the Great or King Rama V (1868-1910), the son of King Mongkut and grandfather of the late King Bhumibol. A highly revered reformer, he ruled for more than four decades and is particularly remembered for abolishing slavery, promoting public education, establishing modern infrastructure, instituting social reforms and setting up the ministerial system. On this public holiday, Thais pay homage to his equestrian statue at the Royal Plaza in Bangkok and lay incense, wreaths and other floral tributes.
