This comedy-musical performance group hails from Argentina and was formed in 1967 by Gerardo Masana. "Luthiers" in French means "musical instrument maker," and is an appropriate name for the group, who is known for their home-made musical instruments created from everyday materials including hoses, funnels, tins, paint cans, bicycle wheels, barrels, coconuts and a plethora of other objects. Some of these instruments are simple informal pieces and some are parodies of actual musical instruments.

Les Luthiers began writing in a Baroque style, imitating several vocal genres, and later incorporating styles such as opera, pop, mariachi, and rap. Their live performances include skits as well as musical performances, and much of their humor relies on contradictions between formality and silliness and clever wordplay.
