Wayne Shorter is a jazz saxophonist from Newark, New Jersey, who has been hailed as one of the greatest improvisers of modern jazz. After honing his signature style, he was courted by Miles Davis, on recommendation from John Coltrane, to join his quintet, and after some persistent probing from the jazz icon, Shorter accepted in 1964 and went on to participate in one of the most influential groups in jazz history. At around the same time, he recorded several solo albums with Blue Note Records and formed the jazz fusion group Weather Report before assembling his first permanent quartet under his name in 2000. With several of his compositions now considered jazz standards, Shorter is widely considered a living legend by both critics and his contemporaries.
