Dr Shanon Shah is a member of Queer@Kings and joined KCL as Lecturer in Religion and Social Science in September 2018, having been awarded his doctorate in the sociology of religion in 2015. He was previously Associate Lecturer in Religious Studies at the University of Kent and a research intern at the William Temple Foundation. Shahs book The Making of a Gay Muslim (Springer, 2017) highlights the lived experiences of gay Muslims in Malaysia, where Islam is the majority and official religion, and in Britain, where Muslims form a religious minority. By exploring how they negotiate their religious and sexual identities, he challenged the notion that Islam is inherently homophobic and that there is an unbridgeable divide between Islam and the West. Building on this work and more recent studies, Dr Shah will be giving a lecture on LGBTQ identities and Islam.
