Songs for a New World was first performed professionally in 2008 in New York's Chernuchin Theatre. With music and lyrics written by Jason Robert Brown, this piece was first produced as an off-broadway show in 1995. The songs to this act were written to stand as individual works. They were put together to give it a semblance of a whole play. This unique song cycle demands a wide range of vocals with music that covers the gospel, jazz and pop genres. Calling this piece of theatre a musical or a revue would not do it enough justice. Songs for a New World consists of four actors who never really stick to the same character throughout the performance but still develop character arcs by the end of the show. The theme of the play is based on "the moment of decision". The production also includes a musical ensemble which plays a prominent role in the development of this act. Due to its minimal cast requirements, this act is a hit with college theater clubs and amateur theater companies.
