Despite being considered by many to be one of the most controversial ballets in the history of music, Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring (Le Sacre du Printemps in the original French) remains one of the composer's most popular and revolutionary works. Stravinsky's prior experimentation in unorthodox rhythms and musical dissonances rarely heard in the music of the early 20th century came together to form a magnum opus of such tremendous intensity that a riot broke out following the work's premier in Paris in 1913. The ballet presents to the audience an ancient pagan ritual where a young girl dances herself to death as a sacrifice for the coming Spring. Stravinsky's groundbreaking compositional technique, combined with the talents of famed choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky, ensured the creation of a masterpiece that is still considered by many to be the first quintessential example of 20th century music.
