The first Gay Pride event in Britain took place in the early 1970s, as a way to mark the riots which erupted in 1969 at New York's Stonewall Inn in protest at police harassment of gay people. Since the very first march, which only attracted a few hundred participants, the annual Pride London event has blossomed into a massive parade through the streets of central London, celebrating the diversity and strength of the lesbian and gay community. The carnival-style parade is preceded by a week long festival to celebrate the LGBT liberation movement. Beginning at Portland Place, the parade wends its way south, finishing up at Whitehall.
