Based on Alexander Pushkin's novel written in verse and directed/choreographed by John Cranko, Onegin is a dance performance that is theatrical in its storytelling abilities. While the ballet is performed to the musical works of Tchaikovsky, interestingly enough, it does not take any pieces from the composer's opera Eugene Onegin. Following the daily life of St. Petersburg socialite Eugene Onegin who, out of boredom, moves to the country and eventually finds himself in a love triangle, the ballet successfully conveys this drama and the falsehoods of Russian high society through the art of dance.
