Shortly after being formed in 1998 by five schoolhouse friends, New York-based band The Strokes recorded a few songs, sent the demo to a couple labels and immediately started one of the biggest bidding wars between record labels for a rock bands in years. The group's 2001 debut album, Is This It, released on RCA, helped catapult The Strokes to international stardom. With a throwback, garage rock sound and a rambunctiously brash, endearing style, The Strokes were looked at as the possible saviors of rock n' roll during its formative years. After releasing the well received 2003 LP Room on Fire, then 2006's disappointing First Impressions of Earth, group tensions forced the band to take a break. During this time, members would go on to launch solo projects, as well as face personal demons, like confronting and overcoming additions to drugs and alcohol. When the group's members returned to create 2011's Angles, something was different. Its characteristic swagger gone--replacing it, a older, more mature band that wasn't interested in getting drunk and performing shoddily. While fans might have qualms with the changes that have befallen the band, the reinvented group's more professional approach has helped turn The Strokes into a more capable working vehicle that'll hopefully continue to perform and release studio material for years to come.
