Recognized as one of the most successful alternative rock acts to emerge out of the UK in the 1990s, Muse has earned a reputation for encompassing several different rock genres since its conception in 1994. The band first captured a blend of progressive rock, hard rock, space rock and heavy metal with its 1999 debut album Showbiz, but has consistently evolved its sound from there. For its 2001 follow-up album, Origin of Symmetry, Muse introduced an organ into its instrumental repertoire and began to showcase classical romantic elements into its already extravagant sound. The band released its fourth studio album, Black Holes and Revelations, in 2006 with a futuristic electronica/space rock sound that offered lighter, more melodic results than its usual distorted bass-driven sound. With each of its subsequent albums, such as the 2009 symphonic rock epic The Resistance, adding a new dimension to its sound, Muse is one of the few modern rock bands to remain progressive throughout its career.
