Featuring
Ben Gibbard is a singer/songwriter and musician from Bremerton, WA who is well known as the lead singer of indie rock band Death Cab for Cutie. Growing up during the grunge phrase of the early 1990s, he was highly influenced by alternative rock bands such as Nirvana, The Stone Roses, Pixies and Pavement. Gibbard formed the band Pinwheel with Justin Kennedy before starting side projects All-Time Quarterback! and Death Cab for Cutie in 1997. With his lyrics and songwriting strengths, as well as the addition of guitarist Chris Walla, Bassist Nick Harmer and drummer Nathan, Death Cab for Cutie slowly rose as a premier indie rock band. Widespread recognition for the band began with the 2003 release of Transatlanticism, an album that exemplifies Gibbard's prolific storytelling ability. Death Cab for Cutie's following albums, 2008's Plans and 2011's Codes and Keys, reached number one and three, respectively on the US albums chart, and the band headlined both the Sasquatch Music Festival and the Treasure Island Music Festival in 2011. To channel his electronic music ideas, Gibbard started the electronic indie pop act The Postal Service with producer Jimmy Tamborello of Dntel. The duo's 2003 album Give Up became certified gold, featuring guest vocals from Jenny Lewis and Rilo Kiley as well as the band's most recognizable single, "Such Great Heights." Though his repertoire of projects continues to grow, Gibbard has released only one solo effort, a split LP with Andrew Kenny of the American Analog Set titled Home Volume V.
